The 43-year-old former QPR and Rangers boss, who replaced Tony Mowbray at the Stadium of Light helm on December 18, has lost his job just 12 games into his reign following successive Sky Bet Championship defeats to Huddersfield and Birmingham.

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman told the club’s official website: “We are disappointed that Michael is leaving Sunderland AFC.

“Our desire is to improve and unfortunately that hasn’t been evident, as such we take full accountability and feel that acting decisively is in the best interests of the club.

Everton’s 10-point deduction for breaching financial rules reduced to six

Everton have had their penalty for breaching Premier League financial rules reduced to six points following an appeal.

The Toffees were hit with a 10-point deduction last November after an independent commission found they had exceeded permitted losses under the league’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) by £19.5million over an assessment period ending with the 2021-22 season.

An independent appeal board has now cut that by four points, which moves the club on to 25 points in the table and up to 15th place.

France 1-0 Argentina: Mateta header settles Olympics thriller

France continued their 100% record at their home Olympics as they defeated Argentina 1-0 to advance to the semi-finals.

Crystal Palace s Jean-Phillipe Mateta headed in from a cross from his former club-mate Michael Olise five minutes in, and that ultimately proved enough for Thierry Henry s men to progress.

VAR disallowed France a second late on, but Argentina could not make their fortune count before tempers boiled over between the players at the final whistle.

Argentina came out on top in the 2022 World Cup final between these great footballing nations, and there were an equal amount of thrills and spills this time around.

Mateta s early goal set the tone for a dominant display from Les Bleus in the first half, with Enzo Millot going close before Geroni…

Argentina and Colombia named co-hosts of expanded Copa America 2020

Argentina and Colombia have been confirmed as co-hosts of Copa America 2020.

The two countries were officially named host nations on Tuesday by CONMEBOL, who earlier this year rejected a proposal from the United States.

CONMEBOL confirmed on Tuesday that the expanded tournament, comprising 38 matches, 12 more than the current format, will initially be split into two groups of six teams.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag hails ‘massively important’ Jonny Evans

Erik ten Hag praised “massively important” Jonny Evans after the defender was drafted into the starting line-up and helped Manchester United to a 1-0 victory against Burnley.

The 35-year-old made his first start for the club since 2015 and, as well as helping secure a much-needed clean sheet, set up Bruno Fernandes for the only goal after having an earlier header ruled out.

Evans re-signed for the club earlier this month following his release by Leicester, and boss Ten Hag said: “We have problems and in this moment a lot is against us: injuries, decisions and we have all seen the examples.

A proud night for Jonny

Hazard headlines Belgium squad for Euro 2016

Chelsea attacker Eden Hazard is the standout name in Marc Wilmots final 23-man Belgium squad for Euro 2016.

Hazard struggled to find his best form at Chelsea in 2015-16, but remains an undisputed starter for his country, with Wilmots naming the winger as his captain in the absence of Vincent Kompany.

The Manchester City centre-back was already left out of the provisional squad due to injury and is one of a number of defenders who misses out on the tournament in France.

Nicolas Lombaerts (Zenit St Petersburg), Dedryck Boyata (Celtic), Bjorn Engels (Club Brugge) were all forced to pull out due to injury, with Laurent Ciman and Christian Kabasele added to the Belgium roster.

Belgium s injury worries at the back mean Wilmots is likely to opt for a four-man …

Jurgen Klopp’s honours as Liverpool manager

Jurgen Klopp has announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, a moment which will bring to an end another successful chapter in the club’s history.

Klopp arrived at Anfield late in 2015, tasked with bringing trophies back to the club.

With four still to play for in this campaign there is every chance he could add to those he has already won, which the PA news agency lists here.

2019/20 – Premier League

Perhaps the one which matters the most to Liverpool fans, Klopp returned the first league title in 30 years as his side finished 17 points clear of Manchester City. The sadness for the supporters was that, as it came during lockdown, no fans were present in the stadium to celebrate the success, which was confirmed when nearest rivals City…

The stripes are back! Juventus reveal 2020-21 kit

Cristiano Ronaldo will be back in black and white stripes next season as Juventus revealed their home kit for the 2020-21 campaign.

Ronaldo scored the opener as a 2-0 win over Sampdoria on Sunday propelled Juve to their ninth successive Serie A title.

Juve had dropped their traditional black-and-white striped kit for this season, instead going with a block colour design.

However, the stripes – in a painted design – will return as Juve hunt a 10th straight Scudetto next season, with Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala among the stars to model the new Adidas kit, which was released on Thursday, with the tagline: our stripes, our statement.

With the current season still not over in Italy, it has not yet been confirmed when the next Serie A campaign will start.
